

Born in Charlotte on June 9, 1930, he was the only child of Clyde Thomas and Cleo Williams McWhirter.
He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
A retired sales representative for General Electric, Jimmy graduated from Tech High School. He was a veteran serving with the US Army Reserves during the Korean Conflict and held membership in the VFW. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge and was an avid sports fan.
Known as “Pawpaw” to many local children, he along with his wife, Charlene owned and operated Derita Day Care for more than 35 years.
He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel "Danny" Parks McWhirter.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Charlene Henderson McWhirter; four children, Christine Blumberg of Charlotte, Dale McWhirter and his wife, Jane of Charlotte, Becky Ketner of Lincolnton and David McWhirter and his wife, Kelly of Charlotte; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services are planned for 11 am Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 6440 Old Statesville Rd., Charlotte, NC 28269.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 pm, December 12, 2014 at McEwen Funeral Service-Derita Chapel, 6300 Mallard Creek Rd., Charlotte, NC 28269.
Burial will take place in Charlotte at Evergreen Cemetery directly following the services.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 6440 Old Statesville Rd., Charlotte, NC 28269.
