Dr. John Emmett Moses, 98, passed away on May 23, 2024 at his home. Born October 7, 1925 in Charlotte, and raised in Belmont, John was the youngest child of Lebanese immigrants, Joseph Moses and Tamam Daybis.
John attended Belmont Abbey College, and graduated at Georgetown University in 1951, where he received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery. John served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War Two. While studying at Georgetown, John met his future wife, Lucille. They married in 1952 and moved to Charlotte where John practiced dentistry for 68 years. John was active in the Charlotte Dental Society for his entire career. John had a deep sensitivity to his dental patients. He went so far as to learn and use hypnosis to anesthetize patients who could not tolerate injections of anesthetic.
Faith, family, and hospitality were central to John’s life. He was a member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church from 1964 until his death, where he participated in the Holy Name Society, the Men’s Club, and as an usher until just a few years before his death. Always proud of his Lebanese heritage, John was a founding member of the Metrolina Phoenicia Club. He was an active member of the Charlotte Optimist Club for many decades where he served as president.
John took great joy in his family and loved visits and gatherings of his large extended family. He always took a strong interest in the lives of his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and cousins. John practiced hospitality in its deepest sense. Welcoming people in his home to share their stories, he put them at ease and always looked for connections. He always held a special place in his heart for recent immigrants that he met, asking about their family, their customs, and their experience here. John’s family stretched well beyond blood lines as he welcomed many friends and neighbors as his family. While strongly committed to his own faith, he always showed a deep respect and openness to people of other faiths.
John’s sense of humor is legendary. When asked by a doctor to list his highest level of education, John quipped “Marriage” with a twinkle in his eye.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 68 years, Lucille Nasser Moses; siblings, Dewan Moses, Alma Slaten, Lillian Farris, Helen Stevenson, Eva Estridge, Rose Moses, Shukree "Chick" Moses, and his twin Dr. Joseph Moses.
John is survived by his daughter, Gabrielle Moses-Markle and son-in-law, Ford Markle; son, Phil Moses and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth McMeekin; and grandchildren, Brianna, Jonathan, and Leah Markle; and Rafael, Gabriel and Jamila Moses, and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
