
He was born on October 21, 1943 in Camp Forrest, Tenn. to John Alan Purvis, Sr. and Laura Gibson Purvis. Alan attended Myers Park High School, the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill, and received a BA degree from Western Carolina University. He served in the United States Army and was a former educator. He was a long time member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
Alan's greatest joys in life were helping others, and the love of his family. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Bill Ellett of Columbia, S.C.; nephew, Bill Ellett III of Washington, D.C.; nieces, Lee Ellett Wolfe and husband Bill and Stacie Ellett Ward and husband JC; great-nephews, Jay Wolfe, John Wolfe, John Coleman Ward, Ellett Ward and Gibson Ward, all of Chapin, S.C.; and his devoted companion, Gloria Martin of Charlotte, N.C.
A burial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13th, at the National Cemetery in Salisbury, N.C., 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, N.C.
