On Thursday, September 23, 2021, John Charles Stiles of Charlotte, NC, loving husband of the late Dorothy Stiles, father of 2 children, 3 stepsons, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, died at the age of 93.
John was born August 3, 1928, the second of six children, to Richard and Elsie Stiles in Charlotte, NC.
In 1950, he enlisted in the Air Force where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and served in the Korean War with the 3rd Air Rescue Group. He was awarded numerous medals for his time in the service. After being honorably discharged from the military, John moved to Greensboro, NC where his two children were born to his former spouse, the late Alice Christie.
John returned to Charlotte and enjoyed a long career at Black and Decker as a warehouse supervisor until his retirement in 1993.
His greatest passions in life were his family, woodworking, music, and golf. He enjoyed spending time in his woodworking shop with his ever-present cigar and crossword puzzle. Out of the shop came hand-crafted furniture, cutting boards, and cigar box guitars--each with his signature style and precision. John was a voracious reader and lover of the English language, a stickler for correct grammar and the meaning of words. He also enjoyed jazz music and had a large collection of greats from his era, a passion he shared with his wife Dot.
He will be remembered for his dedication to his family, a fantastic sense of humor and distinct laugh, his tireless devotion to gaining knowledge and his kindness to all he encountered.
He is survived by many who loved him including his sister Nellie (Jimmie) Drye and brother Jack Stiles; his son Kevin (Sandra) Stiles; his grandchildren, Adam Stiles and Frankie (Jonathan) Hanna; great-grandchild Mary Hanna; stepsons; David (Rita), Chris (Bridget) and Billy (Tina) Winslow; step-grandchildren, Joshua (Chantal), Darran (Alexa), Brian, Michael (Laura), Dylan, and Whitney Winslow; and step great-grandchildren Bella, Lilah and Max Winslow.
John was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy “Dot” Stiles and daughter Kim Stiles Beck.
May we all be continuously inspired by him and his legacy.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1pm on Saturday, October 2nd at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte. (For those wishing to send flowers, please ask the florist to deliver them to McEwen - Pineville Chapel.)
