

Johnnie Mae Hartis Stancil MATTHEWS - Mrs. Stancil passed away on July 10, 2012, at Plantation Estates in Matthews, NC, where she had lived for almost 24 years. She was 101 and½years old. She maintained her sharp mind and physical independence until about 3 weeks before she died. She was born on January 9, 1911 in Matthews, NC to John Robinson Hartis and Mary Addie "Mallie" Stinson Hartis. She is part of the sixth generation of the Hartis family in the United States. She was the 7th of 10 children, only 5 of whom lived past early childhood. She grew up in Indian Trail, Stanfield, and Mt. Gilead NC, and graduated from Indian Trail High School in 1928. She then attended Brown Business College in Charlotte, NC. Johnnie married Herman Grier Stancil in 1935, and they had 61 years together before he passed away in 1996. They had four children: Jerry (who died in a plane crash in 1966), Tim (Herman Kenneth), Judy, and Don. In addition to raising 4 children, Mrs. Stancil worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1972, was a Cub Scout den mother, an active participant in the Order of the Eastern Star, and involved in the work of several churches (Williams Memorial Presbyterian Church, Albemarle Road Presbyterian Church, and Matthews Presbyterian Church. Johnnie and Herman moved to Plantation Estates in 1988, and were among the first residents. Many people who live at Plantation Estates credit Johnnie with being a welcoming, helpful friend. Mrs. Stancil is survived by her children: Tim (Herman Kenneth) Stancil and wife Rosalie of Georgetown, Texas, Judy Robinson and husband Ed of Winona, Texas, and Don Stancil and wife Peggy of Roanoke, Virginia; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grand-children; and 2 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Trudy McQuown of Peoria, Arizona; and many relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Herman Stancil; son Jerry Grier Stancil, 1 grandchild, 1 great grandchild, and 8 sib-lings: Clingman Hartis, Burdett Hartis, Walter Hartis, a stillborn infant, John Herman, David Floyd, Margaret Ruth, and JC Hartis; and many relatives and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at the Plantation Estates Auditorium, 733 Plantation Estates Drive, Matthews, NC at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012, with Chaplain Larry Watts officiating. Graveside services, led by Reverend Dick Shaw, will be held on Saturday, July 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Williams Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 4700 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC For additional information, please contact Don Stancil at 540-353-6925.
