The son of George Beckham and Louise Walker, was born and raised in Charlotte, NC. He attended South Mecklenburg High School, where he graduated class of 1979.
At age, 20, Johnny started working for Mecklenburg County and valued every role where he served his city. He was employed with the county for 45 years and was highly valued for his devotion to the work. Not only was he committed to his team in the workplace, but also his teams outside of the workplace. When Johnny wasn't in a truck handling things for the citizens of this city, he was also fulfilling the role of a coach on the field. He coached his teams to multiple victories, returning home with many trophies and accolades for his ability to lead his players to championship wins.
While he may have been a man of few words, he had a big heart that enjoyed sports (Miami Dolphins fan - win or lose), country music and a good beer while completing his puzzle projects at home. A home he shared with his ladylove, Jessica for 22 plus years. The two met at a baseball game and decided to go on a date. The rest was history when Jessica started to cancel the date because her son was with her and he said, "Bring him too!" That simple phrase spoke so much to his caring nature and character. From that moment on, he consistently cared for Jessica and her children until the end.
Johnny is survived by his fiancé, Jessica Penland (Charlotte, NC); sisters, Doris Beckham (Charlotte, NC) and Louella Luckey (Charlotte, NC); brothers, Alonzo Beckham (Charlotte, NC), George Beckham and wife Sharon Beckham(Charlotte, NC), Robert Lee Beckham (Charlotte, NC) and Alfred Beckham and wife Sylvia Beckham (Charlotte, NC); his step-children, Shandrea Lasco and husband Ri'chard Lasco (Charlotte, NC), Andre Penland (Asheville, NC), Nakesha Wedlaw (Charlotte, NC) and Desmond Penland (Atlanta, GA). He is also survived by his son, Adrian Givens and wife Sharell Watt-Givens (Charlotte, NC) as well as a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
