Judith B. Thomson Nisbet, 92, died peacefully on Thursday, January 12, 2012, at the Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. The family wishes to express its appreciation to the caring staff of the hospice unit.
Judith was born in Red Springs, NC, on September 4, 1919, to George T. Bullock and Beatrice McEachern Bullock. Judith attended Peace College and Woman’s College (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro), earning a degree in Art. During World War II, Judith served as a WAVE in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Washington, D.C.
A member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, she was one of the first women elders to serve that church. Judith loved music. She sang in the church choir and with the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte. She loved her Charlotte community and was involved in numerous activities influencing many acquaintances. She also worked for 12 years as a draftsman for the City of Charlotte specializing in city maps. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years and enjoyed sailing. And she acted as a “second mother” to relatives and many of her children’s friends through the years. She was devoted to her extended family and was the family genealogist. She served on the board of Mill Prong Preservation, Inc. that has restored the house where her mother was born in Hoke County, NC.
Judith was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Edward H. Thomson, and her second husband, John Malcolm Nisbet. She is survived by her three children, Cindy Thomson (Mike Murphy), Tommy Thomson (Karen) and Richard “Dicky” Thomson (Theo); grandchildren, Steve Mealy, Laura Benzian, Dana Thomson, Tracy Thomson and Brad Thomson; great-grandson, Daniel Benzian; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and neighbors at the home on Monday, January 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. The memorial service will be held at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, at 11:00 am Tuesday, January 17, 2012. There will be a private interment.
