

She grew up in Midwood Baptist Church and was baptized at age nine. Grace attended First Ward Elementary School where her picture still hangs on the cafeteria wall today, then on to Wilmore where many new friends were made. She then went to the “new” Barringer Elementary School, A. G. on Morehead, the new Spaugh Jr. High, the “old’ Harding High School and then graduated in the first graduating class of the “new” Harding High School in 1962 where she loved “shagging away” to the wonderful beach music and enjoyed visiting O. D. and Cherry Grove in the summer months.
Grace attended Queens College while working at First Union National Bank. She then moved to Chapel Hill and attended I.C.S. Design School. Mrs. Vogel was a designer at Stage Craft Interiors and McDuffie Interiors in Durham. She also designed at Boyles Furniture in Pineville.
She and Mr. Vogel became residents of Palm Beach, Florida in 1984, where she was named “A Leading Redhead”. She and Dan chaired the Heart Ball Auction. She also chaired at that time the largest Salvation Army fundraiser “Hearts of Gold” luncheon for children. She was involved with the Norton Gallery, Palm Glades Girl Scouts, Heart Ball, Bascon Palmer Eye Institute, Chairperson of the Humane Society gala and The Visiting Nurses Association Angel Gala, as well as President of Foxcroft Designs, Red Cross and Cancer Society.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Terry Elmo Allen and Robert “Bob” Allen, and her beloved husband and best friend, Daniel A. Vogel, on January 7, 2014.
Survivors include her daughter, Kimberly Allen Spencer (Jon) of Charlotte; sister, Sylvia Allen Kinney (John) of Chicago, IL; and grandsons, Brandon Sangster (Kimber), Cory Spencer (Amy) and Chase Spencer, all of Charlotte.
Also surviving are “the best nephews ever”, Charles “Chuck” Allen and Barry Beasley, both of Charlotte; and sister-in-law, Sue Allen, of Mobile, Alabama; as well as cousins, Linda Allen Lomax (David), Paula Roberts Morris and Judy Barber; special friends, Diane Belk Jordon, Wendy D’Oleo and the 1962 Class of Harding High School, the best classmates a person could hope to have.
She would also like to mentioned her much loved and “Dan’s Boys” Melanie, Rhett, Bogey and Sinatra, the two “Royal cats”; Sandy and Melanie, Augie I and Augie II and Beau Jest; and her new gorgeous cat “Snow” who brought joy and meaning into her life every day.
Gracie’s family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 30 at McEwen – Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road. Her life will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday July 1 in the funeral home chapel. She will then be laid to rest in Sharon Memorial Park beside her beloved husband, Dan. Following the committal service, a reception for family and friends will be held at McEwen - Pineville.
