

Kathleen Jennie Powis, affectionately known as Kate, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at the age of 17. Born on April 7, 2007 in Livingston, NJ, Kate was loved by all who knew her and was an integral part of her Charlotte community that she cherished and contributed to with her whole heart.
Kate was a member of the class of 2025 at Charlotte Catholic High School. She was poised to embark on a future as bright as her smile. She was a beautiful, determined and hard-working young lady, evidenced by her many achievements. A dedicated student who enjoyed her classes, Kate earned recognition as a member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and National Science Honor Society. In addition to her academic success, Kate played volleyball for eight years culminating with a spot on Charlotte Catholic’s Varsity Volleyball team, proudly wearing jersey #3.
Kate’s hobbies and interests were diverse. She was a talented artist and a great baker, specializing in beautifully decorated cakes and cupcakes. She loved the beach, most notably the Jersey Shore and the Outer Banks, loved to learn about history, travel to new places, and looked forward every year to skiing the Rocky Mountains with siblings, Dad and friends. Kate valued and cherished her friends; spending time with them at the lake, Friday night Cougar’s football games, or parties, or church. She was loyal and loving and had a great laugh.
Megan, Dylan, and Ryleigh, Kate’s siblings, looked up to her; a best friend to Megan, mischievous partner to Dylan, and teacher of all to her “mini me” Ryleigh. Family traditions and time together was of utmost importance to Kate and the void she will leave is indescribable.
Kate decided from the beginning of her cancer journey that she would not be defined by her disease. She was courageous and brave, quietly persisting to live her life to the fullest and attain her goals. Persevering though treatment, she pushed her family to follow through on a visit to the Vatican in Rome just a few months ago. Kate’s life, though brief, was full of love and joy. She will forever be remembered for her radiant spirit and the positive impact she had on everyone she met.
Kate is survived by her parents, Christopher and Krista (nee Thiemer), her sisters Megan and Ryleigh, her brother, Dylan, maternal grandparents Robert and Kathleen Thiemer, paternal grandparents Daniel and Catherine Powis, aunts, uncles and cousins, and countless friends.
Visitation will begin at 4pm on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Service located at 10500 Park Road in Charlotte. Prayer service will start at 6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled in the sanctuary of St Matthew Catholic Church on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 11am. The church is located at 8015 Ballantyne Commons Parkway in Charlotte. Burial will be private.
