After growing up in Atlanta, Laura enrolled at The College of William and Mary and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (with a psychology major and biology minor). Laura excelled on the tennis court, as well as the classroom, and culminated her successful tennis career as a member of William & Mary’s varsity tennis team. Following college, she earned a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Georgia.
Laura used her degrees to pursue a career dedicated to helping others, particularly the less fortunate. Beginning in Raleigh, NC, she worked in several capacities as a social worker supporting children and youth in intensive treatment facilities, counseling and treating children admitted to a psychiatric hospital, and serving as lead social worker at a children’s emergency shelter. Upon moving to Charlotte, she continued to find her calling as a champion of those in need as she worked at Levine’s Children Hospital as well as several local government agencies supporting youth and children. Her unbelievable compassion and empathy for others was unwavering, and she was a fervent advocate for all of her patients and their families during her professional career. Even outside of work, Laura continued her mission to help others by volunteering with several organizations, including Roof Above, with a particular focus on the homeless.
And her kind and generous heart extended to animals as she and her family served as a foster home for abused and neglected dogs and cats for many years, and, at all times, she was a parent to at least three four-legged creatures in her house over the past 25 years. Laura also had a passion for travel, sports and music. Her knowledge of music and sports was legendary within her family, and her adventurous nature led to trips to national parks across the United States, as well as exploring remote areas of other countries around the world.
But her true pride and joy were her two boys – Scott and Andrew. Nothing gave her more delight and genuine happiness than watching the boys participate in various sports over the years. In particular, she beamed when spending hours upon hours in the stands for South Park baseball games, both in Charlotte and across the southeast. While she took pride as both Scott and Andrew excelled academically at all levels, her true satisfaction came from watching them grow up to be independent, kind-hearted and generous and, like her, with an honest compassion for the well-being of others.
Laura is survived by her sons, Scott Newmark and Andrew Newmark; her brother, Dan Holman and his wife, Shelby; her niece and nephew, Adalyn and Nicholas Holman; and her father, John Holman.
Although Laura’s friends and family will miss her wit, kindness and empathy, she will always remain in their hearts.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Laura’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, July 25, at Temple Beth El, 5101 Providence Rd., Charlotte. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support a cause near and dear to Laura, The Salvation Army Center for Hope in Charlotte.
