She is survived by her daughter Leigh Anna Hall (Kevin L Hall); two grandchildren – Logan and Eva Hall; her brother Edward Hathcock; her sister Eleanor H. Guthrie; and 15+ nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Paul E Logan, her parents Julius Hathcock and Eva Glennie Lowder Hathcock, and by her brother Jennings Hathcock, her sister Buna Hathcock, her brother Thomas Hathcock, and her sister Janice H Poulton.
Linda was born in her family home on August 10, 1942, in Norwood, NC. She was raised in a very strict but loving, giving, and community-minded family. Being the 6th of 7 children, she learned quickly to work hard and contribute willingly at home, in the community, and in school, which also carried into her adult life.
During Linda’s school years she was very shy but was a great student and athlete. She spoke highly of several teachers that pushed her to break out of her shyness and many years later credited those teachers for her business successes. Linda was a tremendous athlete. She told the story of scoring 53 points in a single high school basketball game. For a shy girl, sports allowed her an outlet and afforded her friendships that she cherished throughout her life. When asked once about attending a high school dance (sharing a car) with her brother Tommy, she quickly clarified that once at the dance the boys’ basketball team (her buddies) made their way over to her for a dance. She was later recruited by Western Carolina University to play on the women’s basketball team. As scholarships for women were not common at this time, this led Linda to Charlotte, NC instead where she focused on a higher education, career, and continued to play and coach sports (basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis, golf) for years.
Moving to Charlotte at 18 years old to continue her education and find work, she was fortunate that her oldest brother Jennings offered her room and board if she agreed to assist in babysitting her nephews and nieces. Agreeing Linda was able to complete her Associates Degree in Business at Kings College, eventually moving out to share numerous apartments in South Charlotte with her sisters Eleanor and Janice, and begin her very successful, 40+ year career, in the insurance industry. In the course of her work, she made life-long friends at companies like: Associates Insurance (located in the now Morehead Inn on East Morehead St), Cameron Harris & Company, and Marsh & McLennan. She completed her career with Marsh & McLennan as a Vice President, Client Executive, a role she worked very hard for and was not commonly held by women the late 90’s.
While living in the Pinehurst Apartments on Providence Road (where Leigh Anna later lived as an infant), through a mutual friend, Linda met Paul and later married in 1971 at Providence Methodist Church. Marriage for the two was never boring. Leigh Anna was born a year later, and shortly after, Paul had a life-threatening health scare (one of many to follow), changing the couple’s plans for more children. Linda’s mental strength and independence kicked in, knowing that she must ensure she and Leigh Anna were always cared for in case the worst ever happened. Fortunately, the couple was able to enjoy many years of celebrations with family and friends, fun work events, and lots of travel. Paul’s sense of adventure and skills in automotive industry sales provided Linda and Leigh Anna with significant travel both in the United States and globally (Europe, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, etc.).
As a mother and Grammy, Linda instilled strength, independence, humor, kindness, grace, and just a bit of sarcasm into Leigh Anna and her children. She ensured religion and the treatment of others was at the forefront of her family. She introduced several to the real use of a wooden spoon if warranted (just ask Eva and Logan). She also had a knack for making a sour teenager smile, even if that meant pinning them down until all were laughing. Neighbors could hear and joined into her yelling at ACC basketball games on the regular (Go Heels!). Linda was known to Hickory Grove United Methodist Church youth in the 80’s as Youth Leader and Coach where both she (through the parents of the youth and congregation of the church) and Leigh Anna (through the youth) made life-long friends. She was the mom that college girls intentionally dragged to the beach for a weekend of sun and dancing at local clubs. Linda and her sisters Janice and Eleanor hosted many girls’ beach trips with teenagers and any boys the girls met during the trips. Seen as a cool mom, the boys always welcomed her into the fold, thrilling the girls of course (enter said sarcasm). She and Eleanor traveled with Leigh Anna to London once for an exciting theatre and arts experience. She held Grammy camps every summer for Logan and Eva where they played games, sports, and shared cooking skills and life lessons from the kitchen island. Finally, Linda absolutely loved supporting her grandchildren and their friends at all sporting events (basketball, soccer, baseball, softball). She was a very proud mom and Grammy.
