He was born December 13, 1943, in Charlotte, NC to Lloyd McKinley Cochran, Sr. and Catherine Hunnicutt Cochran. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Anda Williams Cochran; his daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Buddy Holson and his beloved grandsons, McKinley and Nolan, of Charlotte. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Darrell Smith of Louisville, KY; his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Joy Cochran of Fayetteville, GA; and several nieces and nephews. Mickey was predeceased by his parents. One of the greatest losses of his life was that of his dad in 2005, with whom he worked beside daily, sharing home gardening and other chores.
Mickey lived a life of service. In his early work career Mickey was a firefighter with the Charlotte Fire Dept. His real desire was to be a law enforcement officer and in 1968 he joined the Meckenburg County Police Department. In 1975, he made a lateral transfer to the Charlotte Police Department. When a shoulder disability cut his police career short, Mickey worked in corporate loss prevention, became a licensed private investigator and then worked for BB&T as a bank fraud investigator for 13 years. Of late, Mickey has served by assisting with funeral services for Dignity Funeral Services. When asked, “Why?” he always said, “I like to help people.” Mickey was an old cop at heart, never losing affection for that work and his law enforcement friends.
An active member of Newell Masonic Lodge 739, he served two terms as Master, encouraging others in the craft. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and a past member of Oasis Shrine.
Mickey’s heart and soul were his family and friends. He had many of both. He made friends wherever he went and was known for his banter and nonsense. Mickey was a devoted husband and an incredible father, but his favorite title of all was “Papa”. Mickey adored his nine and two year old grandsons and did everything he could to spoil them rotten, even when Christy admonished him for trying to give them sweet tea as babies. The boys had their Papa wrapped around their fingers and they will miss him greatly.
Funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, January 14th at Newell Presbyterian Church with Reverend Fred Rose officiating. Interment will follow in Charlotte Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM Wednesday at McEwen Funeral Service - Derita Chapel.
