

Lynn Brown Heffner passed away Saturday, December 18, 2021 at Legacy Heights Senior Living Community, in Charlotte, N.C. She died peacefully in her sleep. She was under the care of a wonderful, vigilant staff. She was 88 years of age.
Lynn was born on May 16, 1933 in Fleetwood a small community on the New River near Boone, N.C. She was the daughter of Walter H. Brown and Clara D. Brown. They later moved to Boone. She graduated from Appalachian University with a B.A. in Education. She later completed a M.A. in Education also at Appalachian. She worked for many years as a primary education teacher for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. She also worked in the pioneering Headstart Program and was responsible for teaching hundreds of disadvantaged children to read. After retirement, she continued working part-time at tutoring centers.
In her younger years she enjoyed playing Beethoven’s Sonatas #80 (“Pathetique”) and #23 (“Appassionata”) on the piano.
She was married to Robert Heffner (Bob) who passed away in June, 2015. Her beloved sister Joy West of Pittsburgh, P.A. also preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons Robert G. Qualls
and his wife Ruth A. Johnstone of Reno, N.V., Robert Heffner, Jr, of Atlanta, and her daughter Catherine Fortwengler of Charlotte. She is also survived by grandchildren Laurel Fortwengler, Sarah Fortwengler, and Mary Heffner. She is survived by her sister Joy’s daughter, Lisa Crossland and her husband Dan, of Hockessin, Delaware, as well as their sons David, a graduate of Auburn University, and Jeffrey Crossland, currently a student at Pennsylvania State University.
A service to celebrate Lynn’s life will be held at 1:00 PM, December 29 at the Providence Presbyterian Church, 10140 Providence Church Lane, Charlotte, N.C., 28277. It will be followed by a short burial service in the cemetery, where she will join her husband Bob.
