Mabel was born in Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Her mother, Carrie Conder, was the second wife of William Harry Hand. Her two brothers, Lewis and Wade have preceded her in death. Harry Hand put an ad in the newspaper after his first wife died and left him with several children to support. The marriage lasted until his death in 1972. The Hands had a farm where Mabel had trouble with a rooster and a goose. The rooster would hide around the corner of the house. When Mabel came out to go to school, the rooster would chase her and peck at her. Then he'd do it again when she came home. A goose did the same.
Mabel didn't care for school and in the 10th grade she left. She found a job at the Woonsocket Mill on Monroe Rd. She and her father went to work together.
Mabel was very popular with the boys by this time. Boys would buy tickets at the local dances in order to dance with the girl they were interested in. Her tickets always sold out.
About 1949 or 1950 she met George Thomas Bobo. He was very handsome and three months later on March 10, 1950 they were married. Mabel stayed busy with their three children, Royce Wayne, Patricia Louise and Curtis Lynn.
Mother and dad were very happy together their first few years. They lived at several places in the Hoskins and Thomasboro neighborhoods until 1956. On Wayne's 5th birthday of that year the family moved t0 515 Ideal Way on the poorer edge of Dilworth only three blocks from Griffith Ball Park. She lived there until 2004, 49 years when she had to go into a nursing home; she was falling a lot and hurting herself.
Neither mother or Dad ever finished school though both were very bright and it was important to them that their children have a good education. We did alright and I can remember them being proud to remark that all of us graduated high school and stayed out of jail and were raised in church. She was proud of her children and was especially proud of her two granddaughters Caitlin Geneva Balbosa and Anastasia Le Anne Belk and their children Luke Tyler Balbosa, Mikayla Josephine Balbosa, Joseph Wayne Belk and Mabel Joy Belk.
She was preceded in death by her parents William Harry Hand and Carrie Conder; husband George Thomas Bobo; brother’s William Lewis Hand and Wade Wilson Hand; and her many half sisters and brothers.
She is survived by her children Royce Wayne Bobo and his wife Elizabeth, Curtis Lynn Bobo and Patricia Louise Rader Bobo; grandchildren, Caitlin Geneva Rader Balbosa and her husband Koester, Anastasia Le Anne Rader Belk and her husband Jason; great-grandchildren, Luke Tyler Balbosa, Mikayla Josephine Balbosa, Joseph Wayne Belk, Mabel Joy Belk.
A funeral service for Mabel will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2018 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Providence Rd Church of Christ, 4900 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28212.
