It is with heavy hearts that the family of Margaret Wood Worthy Cartner announce her passing. After a beautiful and long life, Margaret went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 31, 2026. She will be remembered for her strong faith, love of music, countless acts of service, her generosity and most of all for her never-ending love and devotion to her family.
Margaret was born June 5, 1935 in Woodruff, SC. She married Thomas Minter Worthy at the age of 17 and graduated high school the following year. Margaret and Tom built a beautiful life together. During their long and happy marriage of 47 years, they traveled, raised a family, ran their own business in Charlotte and made lifelong friends. Margaret was a devoted mother to her two children, Sandra and Lester, and often spoke of her happy memories of that time watching softball games and pee-wee football. In later years, Tom and Margaret were overjoyed to welcome 5 grandchildren whom they adored, often hosting grandkid sleepovers, birthday parties, and trips to the mountains. After Tom’s passing, Margaret was blessed to fall in love again and has been happily married to Carl Ray Cartner these past 24 years. She joyfully welcomed into her family two adult children from Carl’s first marriage and later two more grandchildren. Margaret’s devotion to her family continued well into her later years hosting annual summer “birthday bashes”, the last of which was a joyful celebration of her 90th birthday.
Margaret lived her life with purpose and hope. With boundless energy, she had a talent for adding beauty to the world around her. She found joy in serving her church in countless ways over the years and in just the last 6 months of her life, she hand-made over 100 angels and crosses to be given to children and adults on an upcoming mission trip. Margaret’s life was a beautiful collection of days spent singing in the choir or her trio group, caring for those she loved, laughing with friends, and serving the God she loved. She will be greatly missed by all those who cherished her.
In addition to her husband, Carl, Margaret is survived by her daughter, Sandra Bilbro and husband David; Carl’s children, Curtis and Robin; 7 grandchildren, Jessie, Elizabeth, Leslie, Michael, Victoria, Jacob, and Christina and their families including 8 great-grandchildren, and many other cherished family, friends, neighbors and her church community.
Margaret was preceded in death by her first husband, Tom; her beloved son, Lester, and her brother, Juke.
Margaret’s family will receive friends at 11am on Thursday February 12th, 2026 at Calvary Baptist Church, 2727 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Rd., Charlotte, NC 28214, followed by a service at 12:30pm with pastors Jack Homesley and Scott Davis presiding. Burial in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
Flowers can be sent to Calvary Baptist Church and memorial contributions in memory of Margaret may be made to the Building Fund at Calvary Baptist Church.
