Mary was born into a large family in Brooklyn, NY, one of nine children, during the austere days of The Great Depression. She was a daughter of New York, her beloved Brooklyn, Ebbets Field, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Coney Island and Rockaway Beach. After WW II, she met the love of her life, Osbourne “Tom” McLiverty, a decorated war veteran. They began their life together in New Jersey and had five children before moving to Vermont in 1968 where Mary became very active in the local school and made many lifelong friends. She delighted in the antics of her kids and the successes they had in school and sports.
Nearing retirement age, Mary and Tom moved to the warm climate of North Carolina where they spent their final years enjoying their grandchildren, the sun, and their beloved church, Saint Gabriel’s. Mary loved tending garden in the long growing season, caring for her mother who spent winter months with her and enjoyed volunteering in her church and community. She had a great passion for musical theater, had the voice of an angel and she instilled the love of all music in her children. Her favorites were Judy Garland, the Sound of Music and every Broadway show of the 50’s.
A true Irish beauty, Mary and Tom were married 68 years until Tom’s death in August 2017. Mary is survived by her five children, Lawrence McLiverty and his wife, Kathy, of Woodstock, VT, Susan Stratton and her husband, John, of Daytona Beach Shores, FL, Barbara Trulby and her husband, Jim, of Fort Mill, SC, Peter McLiverty of Chicago, IL, and Elizabeth McLiverty of Pine Plains, NY, and her seven grandchildren, Justin McLiverty of Suffolk, VA, Derek McLiverty of Mt. Pleasant, NC, Maddie McLiverty of Wilmington, NC, Laura Overton of Greensboro, NC, McLean Kotas of Los Angeles, CA, and Emma and Ryan McLiverty of Woodstock, VT. She is also survived by her two sisters, Kathleen Holman of New York City, NY and Anne Cappellini of Worchester, MA, and her brother, Robert McLean of Warwick, NY, along with many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that contributions be made to Hospice and Community Care, P.O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731.
A funeral mass will be held on Friday, October 12 at 10:30 A.M. in the chapel at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC.
