Maryann Allen Echols, 79, of Charlotte, passed away November 19 in her home surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was born in Hamlet, NC to the late George Washington and Edna Fletcher Allen.
Maryann - Nomae - will be remembered by all who knew her as a loving friend and sensible confidante. She was committed to teaching and learning throughout her life. After devoting her early years to raising her children, she became a teacher at South Mecklenburg. For 18 years she taught biology and physical science with compassionate discipline. She laughed and cried with her students, inspiring many to careers in medicine and the sciences.
She was preceded in death by her brother, George W. Allen, Jr. She is survived by her children Scott (Pauline), David (Cathy), and Jennifer (Adrian Holbrook); her grandchildren Fletcher, Sarah, Cameron, and Annie; her sisters Margaret (Ned) Barclay and Flora (Hap) Crowe; and brother Joe Allen.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the Pineville Chapel of McEwan Funeral Home on Monday, November 27 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice or the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
