Mattie Buchanan Howard

Born September 28, 1937 in Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Ira and Edith Buchanan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Daryl B. Howard; her brothers Ira Buchanan, Jr, and Terry Buchanan, brothers-in-law Pete McConnell and Sonny Nance.

Mattie graduated from Bowman High School in Bakersville, NC and from Howard Business College in Shelby, NC. She was a member of Calvary Church and loved spending time reading scripture. She was employed by Dunbar Stanley Studios and NAPA. She also loved spending time with family and friends and enjoyed painting and writing poetry.

Left to cherish her memories are her sister, Gearldine Ellis and husband Ken of Bakersville, NC, sisters-in-law Barbara Buchanan of Spruce Pine, NC, Faye McConnell of Huntersville, NC and Judy Nance of Mooresville, NC. Also left are a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

The funeral service honoring the life of Mattie B. Howard will be on Friday, June 13, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel with Pastor Russell McKinney of Bakersville, NC officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Interment immediately following the service at Magnolia Memorial Gardens at Calvary Church in Charlotte.

The family would like to extend a very special “Thank You” to the staff of the Yancey House of Burnsville and to the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care for their loving care of Mattie during her final days.
