Mike was a 1953 graduate of North Tonawanda High School in New York where he was a tight end on the NT Lumberjack football team. After high school, Mike served in the Armed Forces for six years, three each in the United States Army and the United States Air Force. During this time, he also attended the University of Buffalo earning his Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy in 1960. He married Mary Patte Schenkel, also of North Tonawanda, on June 14th, 1958, and was a devoted husband and dedicated provider to three children whom he loved endlessly.
Mike began his professional career at Merck, Sharp & Dohme before moving to Rochester, NY where he was employed at the Dewey Avenue Pharmacy. Also as a pharmacist, he later worked at Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport, NY before retiring from the Rochester Psychiatric Center. His rewarding career in pharmacy spanned over 40 years.
Throughout his life, Mike was an avid and talented hobbyist highlighted by his extensive work with stained glass. He enjoyed spending countless hours making lamps, sun catchers and clocks for his loved ones while also running his small business, Mike’s Stained Glass. Mike was a tireless volunteer beginning in 1977 as the Greece Arcadia Booster Club president. He went on to give of himself for years volunteering at a local soup kitchen, Loaves and Fishes, and at Atrium Hospital in the pharmacy in Pineville, NC. What gave him his greatest joy was his congregational involvement and work for many years at Hope Lutheran Church in Rochester, NY and as an elder at Messiah Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC. He was a spiritual leader and lifelong servant of the Lord.
Mike also loved caring for his yellow labs, traveling, coin collecting, stock market watching, reading, card playing and cooking. Above all of these interests however, was his passion and love for sports. Outside of watching his children and grandchildren compete, he was a fanatical Cleveland Indians fan and a loyal fan of both the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. All of these pastimes along with his love for his family, positive energy, and jovial personality will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Mike is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Patte Train; three children, Peter Train (Leigh Ann Spayd) of Houston, TX, Daniel Train (Sandra Frattare) of Rochester, NY, and Susan Train-Evec (Andrew) of Fort Mill, SC; five grandchildren, Tyler Train (Hilary Wagner), Connor Train, Samantha Train, Stephanie Train, and Chase Evec, along with many lifelong friends in New York and North Carolina.
