Moira McEwen McMillan, 90, died peacefully at her residence on January 5, 2024. Until her passing, she had been nearly constantly attended to by her loving daughter Barbara Lynn and her husband, and by the caring staff at Briar Creek Health Center Barclay at SouthPark, in Charlotte, NC.
Born March 10, 1933 in Glasgow, Scotland, UK, she grew up and met her loving husband Jimmy on a blind date at an ice-skating rink. As their love blossomed, they eventually relocated to Toronto, Ontario, CA, in 1953 and were soon married. Moira was an excellent swimmer and even gave lessons for many years. She also worked as a hairdresser in those days in downtown Toronto, and after many great years in Toronto and having been blessed with the births of her daughter Barbara Lynn and son Stewart, the family moved to the Miami, Florida area in 1969. There, they continued to establish a solid family foundation, raising their two children to adulthood.
Then, in the early 80s, Moira and the family relocated to Tallahassee, FL, to follow Jimmy’s brother Robert McMillan’s Baptist ministry. Moira, having completed her Bachelor’s Degree, chose nursing as her career, and provided outstanding service in the OB-GYN field. She was dedicated to her profession, and strong in her religious faith, always active at 1st Baptist Church, and then at Bradfordville Baptist in Tallahassee, attending various bible study classes. She loved a good song, and was well-versed in the “show tunes,” and loved to provide vocal accompaniment to Jimmy’s superb piano playing. She found joy along the way in Scottish Highlands dancing. She and husband Jimmy would constantly entertain friends, dancing and participating in the various Scottish Highlands Games around the Southeast. Moira was well-known for her wry sense of humor and love of laughter. She also had a strong nourishing streak, and even until the end of her days, was known around the community for being quick to help or lend a hand, in almost a big sister sort of way.
Moira is survived by daughter Barbara Browder (Jeff) Charlotte, NC; son Stewart McMillan (Karen) of Tallahassee; and three beloved grandchildren, Christian and Matthew McMillan of Tallahassee, and Shannon Sherman (Daniel) of Austin, TX, and their two wonderful daughters (Moira’s great-granddaughters), Olivia and Isabelle. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews in Canada and Scotland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James McMillan, and her brother Dr. Charles McEwen of Glasgow, UK.
The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to the staff at Brightmore in Ballantyne (Charlotte, NC) and to Briar Creek Health Center, and also for the compassionate, expert care provided by VIA Hospice. Additionally, the family asks that any desired contributions be directed to the continued advancement of overcoming all types of dementia.
