

With her family by her side, Nan Gilmer, 85 years old, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 15th at 8:22 pm. Born October 10th, 1938 in Marion, Alabama, she was the daughter of R.M. and Lorine K Alexander. Nan attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama studying Home Economics, preparing to be a homemaker, wife, and mother.
On June 6th, 1959 she married Donald Gilmer, beginning her life as a homemaker. After a brief stint in Maryland the couple were assigned to Eielson AFB Alaska, where their first son, Donald G. Gilmer Jr. was born. Completing their Air Force assignment, the couple moved to Pensacola, Florida, where their second son, Douglas Alexander Gilmer was born. Following several transfers, the couple finally settled in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they spent the last 40 years.
The joy of Nan’s life was her family. After raising her two sons, Nan’s next big joy was dedicating herself to being a grandmother. (Mama Nan) The high point of every year was the family beach trip to Sunset Beach, and Christmas when everyone gathered. She planned and made these events the most special time of the year.
She was a member of Carmel Baptist Church and an active Sunday school participant. Nan was a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ. She enjoyed being a member of Pine Lake Country Club for the last 25 years.
Nan is survived by her husband of 64 years, Don Gilmer; two sons, Donald Jr. and Doug; four grandchildren: Tara, Trey, Kim, and Kate; four great-grandchildren: Evelyn Faye, Cade, Amilia, and Elias; and two brothers, Kirk and Mike Alexander. She was preceded in death by Bob Alexander.
