

Nancy Mitchell Knowles, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away Friday, December 30th, 2011 peacefully at home at the age of 79.
Nancy was born in Logan, West Virginia on September 2, 1932, to the late William Andrew Mitchell and Helen Bishop Mitchell. Nancy is a graduate of Charleston High School in Charleston, West Virginia and attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Nancy resided in Charleston and Huntington, West Virginia, Richmond, Virginia and Charlotte, North Carolina. Nancy was involved in numerous philanthropic activities in churches and hospitals throughout her life.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James Edward Knowles of Charlotte; sons, James Edward Knowles II, Thomas Andrew Knowles and wife Nancy Prosser Knowles, and Michael Scott Knowles and wife Angela Wells Knowles, all of Charlotte; daughters, Elizabeth Knowles Moffly and husband David Moffly of Charleston, SC, and Jennifer Lynn Kreek and husband Dr. Andrew Kreek of Chattanooga, TN; nine grandchildren, Natasha Knowles and Katy Knowles, both of Charlotte, Andrew Moffly, Bridget Moffly, Patrick Moffly and Sarah Moffly, all of Charleston, SC, Hailey Kreek, Emily Kreek and Andrew Kreek, all of Chattanooga, TN.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Christ Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
A special thanks to all of the caregivers who assisted Nancy through her courageous battle against lung cancer, including the Hospice nurses and the Care Team and Clergy at Christ Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Episcopal Church and the American Cancer Society.
