Nancy Carol Mangum, 91, of Matthews, North Carolina, passed away at her home on the 22nd of March, 2026 with loved ones by her side. She was the beloved daughter of the late Edd Thomas Mangum and Hazel Sosebee Mangum. She was born in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and was only 3months old when the family moved to Charlotte, so she always considered herself to be a “Native Charlottean”.
After transferring from Central High, she graduated from Charlotte Technical High School in 1952, where she was a member of the “Tech High Lunch Bunch”.
Nancy was born with the love of dance called “shagging”, practicing as a young teenager with a doorknob. She was inducted into The Sand Flea Living Legends at Fat Harolds, in addition to the OD Shagging Legends Association and was honored to be included in the Charlotte Area Shaggers Hall of Fame. She also served as Treasurer of the Charlotte Shag Club.
Some of her favorite dance partners included Don Reid, Doug Dellinger, Danny Cain, Jo Jo Putnam, Bobby Robinson and Lacy Moore, just to name a few.
In addition for her love of dance, she was an avid reader, going to the library several times a week.
Nancy retired from Bell South as an Executive Secretary and thoroughly enjoyed retirement – watching Tiger Woods and never missed a Panther’s game.
She is survived by her two daughters: Cande Kirk and her husband, Dan and Cinde Stinson; three granddaughters: Shani Stouffer and husband, Kris and Chelsea Wright and Chloe Carver and husband, Kenny; six great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren and an extra special eighth great grandchild due in July. Nancy was preceded in death by her only sibling, Frances Pace, with whom she adored.
Nancy was a woman of strength, intelligence, class, dignity with an impecable sense of style, and oh, that smile of hers!
What a wonderful legacy this remarkable woman has left us with. She provided us with not only roots, but wings.
As she would always say, “I’ve splashed a lot of paint on my canvas of life”.
A very special mention to her caregiver, Amber, in her last weeks of life. She provided Nancy with exceptional care, comfort and love.
A inurnment graveside service will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, March 29th, 2026 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC.
