Oliver Thompson

Oliver C. Thompson entered this life in Bronx, NY June 29, 1950 as the son of Oliver Edwin Thompson and Colleen Griffin. He attended elementary school and junior high in New York. The family moved to Pleasantville, NJ, where he participated in high school music and athletics. He graduated in 1968. He attended Rutgers University College of Arts and Sciences in Camden, New Jersey where he obtained a BA in mathematics education graduating in June 1972. He did graduate studies in mathematics education in 1975 – 1976. He studied for Certified Financial Planning Designation in 1995.

His occupational history includes instructor of mathematics at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA from 1972 – 1974. Teacher at Camden High School Camden, NJ from 1975 - 1979. Junior Mathematics instructor at Villanova University, Villanova, PA from 1976 – 1979, Administrator and teacher at Christway Christian Academy, Camden NJ form 1979 – 1984. Teacher at Edgemond Regional High School, Atco, NJ from 1984 – 1986, Math Specialist at Camden County College Summons 1985 – 1986. Teacher at Butler Comprehensive High School from 1986 – 1988 in Augusta GA. President and General Agent at Armor Insurance Co. in Augusta, GA from 1987 – 1991, special agent and registered representative at the Prudential Insurance Co. Augusta, GA 1992 – 1994. Teacher at Charlotte Christian Schools from 1998 – 2010. At the time of his death he was on his 4th recertification class to become a certified financial planner.

Oliver’s church ministries have been lifelong. He began serving at St. Augustine Presbyterian Church in New York as a child. As an adult he was a children’s church leader and involved in the choir and played his saxophone at Christway Church in Camden, NJ from 1978 – 1986. After his move to GA in 1986 he was Youth Pastor and played saxophone in the music department from 1986 – 1998 at Living Word Christian Center. The family moved to Charlotte in 1998 where he joined the orchestra at Central Church of God, playing until his most recent move to Ga. in December of 2010 to start new beginnings and pre-retirement hopes of becoming recertified as a financial planner.

Oliver is the husband of Myrna Williams Thompson and the father of 4 children, KnengeThompson, Oliver C. Thompson II (Zipporah Camille Robinson), Orrin Thompson (Melanie Rowe Thompson), and Jeremy Thompson (Adele Nicole Mitchell). He leaves them to mourn his loss along with a brother Arthur Thompson (Esther), sister, Linda Thompson Drew (Earl) and numerous in-laws, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 am until 11:00 am Friday, April 15, 2010 at Central Church of God.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, April 15, 2011 at Central Church of God, 5301 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
