Born in Charlotte on September 4, 1958, she was the second daughter of the late James William (Slug) Claiborne and Jo Ann Bailey Claiborne, of Charlotte. Patty was preceded in death by her husband Robert James Long, Jr. in 2012 and by her father in 2012.
In addition to her mother, Patty is survived by her son Travis James Porter of Ft. Myers, Florida; and by her daughter Bailey Anne Porter of Orlando, Florida. She is also survived by her sister Priscilla Lynn Claiborne and her husband James C. MacIntyre, II, of Charlotte; and by her brother James William (Clay) Claiborne, Jr., and his wife Elaine Cassens Claiborne of Charlotte, and by her nieces and nephews.
Patty graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1976 and Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in 1981. In subsequent years, she lived in many places—Illinois, Texas, and Florida—but she always considered Charlotte to be “home,” and returned in 2012 to live her final years with her mother, enjoying spending time with her extended family. Patty had a lifelong love of the ocean and always looked forward to family beach trips. She was known to be a wonderful cook and spent hours reading cookbooks and magazines and accumulating recipes, especially for scrumptious desserts. To her family and friends, Patty will be remembered as the embodiment of a giving and loving spirit.
