The second of six children, Pattie was born on March 11th, 1932 in Union County, NC to the late Brown Forbes and Eva Mae Thompson. When she was very young, her family relocated to Charlotte, NC where she grew up and lived for most of her life. After she left school, she started working at a local bakery called Jack’s Cookie Co., where she met the man who would become her husband, Jack Willard Miles. They were married in the late 1940s in York, SC and, much to Pattie’s delight, started their family a few years later when they welcomed their first child, Joy.
Pattie remained at Jack’s Cookie Co. for most of her working life and throughout various name changes. She wore many hats during her time there, namely Machine Operator and “Floor Lady” when she was promoted to a managerial role. She enjoyed the work she did and especially valued the friendships she had with the other ladies. She eventually retired at 62 years old when the company was known as Murray Bakery Products.
Pattie attended Oak Grove Baptist Church for some time and, because she loved children so much, she served as a Sunday School teacher for a while. She also had a great passion for gardening vegetables and flowers. Her favorite veggies to tend to were her tomatoes and green beans, and when it came to flowers, she grew Pansies in the fall and Daffodils in the spring, among many others.
In her down time, Pattie liked fixing things around the house and sprucing the place up however she could. When she was able to get out of town, she loved going down to the beach and spending time by the water, so much so that she often dreamt about moving there one day.
Pattie had a great personality – she loved to socialize and go out dancing with her friends from the VFW, and she was always happy to joke around and laugh with anyone she could. As a mother, she could be a strict disciplinarian, but she was consistently patient, compassionate, and ready to listen, and she made sure her children knew how deeply they were loved.
Pattie was preceded in death by her parents, Brown Forbes and Eva Mae Thompson; her former husband and the father of her children, Jack Willard Miles; her daughter, Jackie Lynn Wilson; and her siblings, Dorothy “Dot” Sawyer, Jack Forbes, Ann Cendali, and Doris Murhpy.
Those left to honor Pattie’s memory include her beloved children, Joy Reid (Steve), Deborah Tucker, Denise Turner, and Terri Carson (Kenny); her treasured grandchildren, Michael Wilson, Sherri Sassenger (Josh), Billy Tucker (Ashley), Jesse Tucker (Wendy), Timmy Turner (Jamie), Kylie Wallace (Chris), Krystal Ireland, and Ray Carson; her dear brother, James Forbes (Venita); 14 deeply adored great-grandchildren; two special great-great-grandchildren; and many other precious family members and friends who will all miss her so much.
