Born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on November 13, 1932, Peggy was the daughter of Floyd and Mary McAteer. She grew up in Matthews, North Carolina, where she developed a lifelong love for reading and the simple joys of sitting on the beach.
Peggy had a dedicated career, working for Wells Fargo and later for Sonitrol. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, known for her warmth, kindness, and the deep love she shared with everyone she knew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Toby; her sons, William and Harold McCoy; her husband, Howard McCoy; and her longtime friend, Buddy Evans.
Peggy is survived by her daughters, Carol McCoy Johnson and Theresa McCoy Wells; her brother, Pat McAteer (Judy); eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was a beloved friend, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to all who knew her and will be greatly missed. Though separated from her loved ones for a while, the family finds comfort in knowing it is only temporary.
Peggy’s family will always cherish the memories of her quiet strength and unexpected surprises—like the copy of Fifty Shades of Grey discovered during a family gathering, which brought laughter and a reminder of her spirited nature.
A public visitation will be held, weather permitting, at McEwen Funeral Home at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
The family invites all who knew and loved Peggy to join them in celebrating her life.
