He is survived by his son, Christopher; his grandchildren, Lena and Aiden Brazefield; his sister, Felicia Fernandez; his son-in-law, Jeremy Brazefield; his sister-in-law and brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Dina; his daughter, Melissa; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pedro Fernandez.
Mr. Fernandez was born in New York City, where he lived until he and his family relocated to Charlotte in the late 70's. He graduated from Aviation High School and Copper Union Institute, starting a lifelong love of airplanes.
Mr. Fernandez worked for IBM for over thirty years as a project manager and auditor within the banking industry. After retirement, he was a much sought-after consultant by major banks.
Peter and his wife Dina, were members of St. Gabriel, where they volunteered for various charitable organizations, including Habitat for Humanity. After her death in 2022 by a drunk driver, Mr. Fernandez established the Enedina Fernandez Memorial Fund at Queen's University, Dina's alma mater, to assist International students facing a financial crisis which threatened their ability to stay in school, as well as an annual award to the student who best exemplifies the values that marked Dina's life. He also honored his wife of over 50 years by continuing to work for many charities, such as the food pantry.
Unfortunately, Peter's life was marked by dual tragedies in the last few years. Not only did he lose his beloved wife in 2022, last June he lost his only daughter to Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC), a rare and aggressive form of renal cancer. As a result, he spent most of the last two years of his life by her side in New Mexico, accompanying her to her monthly visits to MD Anderson, where she was in a clinical trial program. When many would have turned away from God, Peter strengthened his relationship with The Almighty, and becoming a devout member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. He was a regular participant of the men's bereavement group, which helped him cope with his losses.
