Phillip was born February 7, 1941, in Reidsville, NC, to Charles Gray Duke, Sr., and Lillian Lea Duke. He was a 1959 graduate of Morehead High School in Leaksville-Spray, NC. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1963. After graduation, he began teaching at McClintock Jr. High School in Charlotte, where he taught for 32 years. While teaching at McClintock, he met Judy Crotts, and they married in 1964. He attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte as a graduate student and earned a Master’s Degree in Education in 1986.
Phillip enjoyed gardening and genealogy. Over the years, he belonged to many genealogical societies and historical associations, and he compiled histories of various families.
In addition to his parents, Phillip was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Smith and husband Joe; brother Charles Duke, Jr., and wife JoAnne; and sister, Virginia Smart and husband Garnet.
Phillip is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy; daughter Emily Thompson and husband Steve; son Phillip “Will” Duke, Jr., and fiancé Tia Tucker and her daughters, Tanner, Savannah, and Piper; daughter Nancy Knox and husband Mike; grandchildren Sloan Duke, Sutton Duke, Emma Knox, Michael Knox, and Christopher Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place at McEwen Funeral Service, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte on Saturday, May 11, 2024 beginning at 10am. Funeral service will follow at 11am. Interment will take place at Sharon Memorial Park.
