Born October 29, 1955 at Robeson County Memorial Hospital in Lumberton, NC, she was the middle daughter of the late Marion Walters Jr. and Norma Cain. Following her graduation from Harding University High School in Charlotte, NC, Reba furthered her education at Brookstone College (NC) where she earned her Associate of Arts in Business Administration and Medical Billing/Coding. Her career path led her to Humana, a major health insurance provider in the United States, where she was an UM Administration Coordinator II for almost 14 years. From her leadership team from her most recent year-end review: ‘To highlight some of her amazing skills as she thoroughly enjoys training, Reba is kind, patient, encouraging, and ensures accuracy in everything she does. She shows genuine care by mentoring new associates and supporting her peers; curiosity through her ongoing skill development and willingness to share knowledge; and commitment by volunteering for additional responsibilities and maintaining a high standard of excellence.’
The joy of Reba’s life was her family and friends. She was a doting wife to her husband Jerry, where they were often seen together trying out new restaurants and cuisines around town, enjoying a Charlotte Knights baseball game, or celebrating her Scottish heritage as a member of Clan Buchanan by attending area Highland Games together. She was also a devoted mother who was there every step of the way in her daughter’s childhood, which eventually led to her most cherished mother/daughter outings and nights as her daughter grew into an adult. Because Reba adored her role as ‘mother’ to her core, this earned her her infamous nickname ‘Mama Dukes’, coined by all those in her daughter’s life that she became like a mother to. Reba also enjoyed Outlander marathons with her best friend Autumn, beach trips with her younger sister PJ, and worshipping her Savior with her older sister Donna.
Reba is survived by her older sister, Donna Hardy (husband: John Hardy | children: Jeannene Emonds-niece, Eve Perritt-niece, and Dorman Hardy-nephew), her younger sister Patsy Walters (children: Richard Walsh-nephew), her son Craig Jackson and daughter-in-law Heather Jackson, and her daughter Mari Anne (soon to be Winters) and soon to be son-in-law, Alan Winters. Reba was also an adoring Nana to her grand pups, Manhattan and Madison Shea.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald ‘Jerry’ Hotaling.
A service to celebrate Reba’s life will be held at a later date in January 2026. At this celebration of life, the family will receive all those who knew Reba or were impacted by her genuine soul.
