

Robert was born on March 4, 1932, to the late Henry Lee Helms and Rosa McKenzie Helms. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest Henry Helms and Ernie Lee Helms. He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Joyce Conder Helms; daughter, Diane Helms Johnson (David) of Jefferson, North Carolina; grandsons, Seth Adam Johnson (Alyson) of St. Petersburg, Florida and Jacob Daniel Johnson (Stephanie ) of New Salem, North Carolina; and great granddaughters, Laila Rose Johnson and Mila Syron Johnson. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Ann Helms Richardson, sisters-in-law, Bet Thomas Helms of Raleigh, North Carolina and Jeri Helms Bassett of Matthews. Robert is also survived by his special sister and brothers-in-law, Bibbie and Robert Wentz and Bob Conder. He leaves behind a multitude of nieces and nephews who adored their “Uncle Robert”.
Robert was a native Charlottean and graduated from Charlotte Technical High School (class of 1950). He retired from Duke Power Company in 1989 after 38 years of service. Robert also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his retirement, he and Joyce traveled extensively and especially enjoyed their time at the South Carolina coast.
Robert was a charter member of Plaza United Methodist Church and was currently a member of University City United Methodist Church. Funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at University City United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gail Werstlein, Rev. Ron Smith and Rev. Chad Cozad. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 PM until the time of service. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the CCU at Presbyterian Hospital for their loving care and support of Robert. He was a man who loved his family and friends and he, in turn, was deeply loved by all who knew him.
