Jim was born on August 19, 1940, in Wallace, North Carolina, to Robert James King and Mary Elizabeth Carter King. He was raised in Wallace, where he graduated from Wallace High School before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While at UNC, he earned a BS degree in Business (when he wasn’t playing poker). During his time there, one of his most cherished memories was attending a sock hop where he first noticed his future wife, distinguished by her pink sweater. Soon thereafter, Jim and Frances were married on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, beginning a marriage that would span nearly 65 years. His lifelong passion for UNC basketball was surpassed only by his deep love for his wife, Frances Rhyne King.
Jim spent the majority of his professional career at Hallmark Cards, where he worked as a salesman, Outside of his career and family, he enjoyed playing bridge, traveling, volunteering at his church, and appreciating good barbecue, as well as following UNC basketball. He was known for his warm personality and quick wit, often offering a kind word or lighthearted remark.
Jim is survived by his wife, Frances Rhyne King; his son, Robert “Bob” James King III and his wife Julie of Greensboro; and his daughter, Katherine “Kathy” Van Pelt and her husband Duncan of Atlanta. He was affectionately known as “Granddaddy” by his four grandchildren: Rhyne King, Grace King, Abigail Van Pelt, and Virginia Van Pelt.
He will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
