Robert Brooks Love

Mr. Love, 94, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at Carolinas Medical Center - Mercy. He was born in Mecklenburg County on July 5, 1917 to Virginia Summerville McCall and Burgess Cook Love.

Brooks was a World War II veteran of the 13th U.S. Air Force and proudly served his country in the Philippines for four years from 1942 to 1945. He was active in the American Legion Post 353 and received many service awards for his work including Legionnaire of the Year. He also helped with the American Legion Baseball Team Post 36 for many years. Brooks was also known as Mr. Woodman (WOW) and had 100 percent family membership in the organization.

Brooks was a lifelong member of Paw Creek Presbyterian Church and the church's oldest member. Through the years he served the church in many capacities including Elder and Deacon and served on many committees including the Cemetery Committee.

For 30 years Brooks worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired in the late '70's. He loved being outdoors working in his garden, driving his tractor, and feeding his birds. He also loved helping people, Sunset Beach, and taking care of his dog, 'L'il Bit'.

Brooks' family includes his loving wife of 69 years, Sue Ballard Love; his daughter, Barbara Love Geer (Ed) of Kernersville, NC; and his granddaughter, Susan Frances Geer-Parsons of Greenville, NC; as well as nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Ashland Elliott and Lillie McGinn; and brothers, Willie Love, Raeford Love, Arlie Love, Egbert Love, Ralph Love, and Harold Love.

A service to celebrate Mr. Love's life will be held at Paw Creek Presbyterian Church at 3:00 PM Sunday, July 10, 2011. The family will receive friends in the church parlor beginning at 2:00 PM, one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Forest Lawn West Cemetery: American Legion Post 353 is providing Military Rites.
