

Born, April 11, 1927, he was the son of the late Charles Spangler Winters and the late Kathryn Truax. Directly after high school, at the age of seventeen, Robert joined the U.S. Navy, proudly serving in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer after thirty years of dedicated service. He was a member of Temple Beth El in Charlotte and the Derita Masonic Lodge. In 2017, at the age of 90, he completed the education he started many years earlier, graduating from Central Piedmont Community College and becoming CPCC’s oldest-ever graduate.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth M. Winters; four children Robert M. Winters, Jr. (Donna), Rebecca Sousa (Daniel), Melanie Davis (Randy), and Ellen Louise Winters (Francois Phan); four step-children, Tony Herrin, Susan Davidson (Ken), Ann Honeycutt (Richard), and George Herrin; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Pearl Georgeson Winters and his second wife Patty Winters.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 21st in the chapel at McEwen Funeral Services – Derita Chapel, 6300 Mallard Creek Road.
