The eldest of three children born to S.C. and Jessie Cooper Hughes, Sandra was born on February 12, 1947 in Burnsville, NC. Sandra learned to cook at the tender age of five when Jessie became ill. Her mom would guide Sandra on meal preparation. This was a talent that she would be known for throughout her entire life.
Sandra helped raise her siblings after her mom passed away at an early age. Once she completed high school, Sandra enrolled in cosmetology school in Charlotte where she learned about self-care, grooming and personal style. From then on, Sandra always made certain her appearance was polished and on point. After a career change, Sandra worked her way to head phone operator at CMC Main where she met her future husband, Daniel P. Oswald.
They married in 1977 and together purchased a house on Patricia Avenue in Harrisburg. This would be their home for over 45 years. Their first child, Rebecca Allison was born in January 1982 and tragically passed away in March 1984. Soon after, son Daniel was born in 1983, followed by Anna in 1986 and infant Jonathan passed away at birth.
Sandra and Daniel were longtime member of Cole Memorial United Methodist Church where Daniel attended as a teenager. Many potluck meals were held at the church and the most popular dishes were always those that Sandra provided. From her potato soup to standing rib roast, homemade spaghetti sauce to her own canned veggies, church members and friends always requested a copy of her many recipes. Daniel grew most of the vegetables in the garden and then prepared them for Sandra to can.
Loving, selfless, compassionate, empathetic and generous are just a few words to describe Sandra. She never met a stranger, loved babies and was an endearing and extraordinary mother and grandmother.
Left to mourn her loss is her devoted husband Daniel, adoring children Andy (Amber) and Anna and cherished grandchildren Logan, Kyle, Tanner and Raelynn; brother Donnie Hughes and sister Martha Taylor.
Sandra is preceded in death by her parents and daughter Rebecca Allison and son Jonathan.
The family will greet friends at 1pm on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at McEwen Funeral Service located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte. Scheduled funeral to begin at 2pm with burial immediately following at Sharon Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Sandra’s name to Susan G. Komen for the Cure (www.komen.org).
