Saxon was known for his love of adventure, and his fullness of heart, which was open to all and closed to none. After nine years at Charlotte Country Day School, Saxon ventured north to Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts. Never one to back down when the odds were against him, Saxon became class president after delivering a true southerner’s speech. When he tired of the New England winters, he returned to Charlotte to graduate from Myers Park High School.
While attending the University of Alabama, Saxon spent a year at The National Outdoor Leadership School, where he discovered his passion for the beauty and challenges of the outdoors. Committing himself to leadership in the wilderness, Saxon returned to Charlotte to work for the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Like all great leaders, Saxon excelled at guiding people outside their comfort zones, though he never appeared to be outside his own.
Saxon will be remembered above all for his love. Those who knew him, loved him. Most important, they never doubted his love for them.
Survivors include his parents, Stewart M. Boswell and Gay Fort Boswell of Charlotte, NC; his brother, James Stewart Boswell and sister-in-law, Sarah Gay Boswell of Nashville, TN; his sister, Lucille McCleary Boswell of Charlotte; his grandparents, James Coker and Jean Smith Fort of Charlotte, and Janet Inscore Boswell of Alexandria, VA; and his “Two Mom”, Andrea Norton McElroy of Charlotte. In addition, he is survived by 11 aunts and uncles and 20 first cousins.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Saxon will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Myers Park Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
