Susanne McCabe Zarins passed away on January 26, 2026 in Charlotte, NC. She was born in 1939 in Toledo, Ohio and attended Ohio Wesleyan University and grad school at Syracuse University where she met the love of her life, Peter Andrew.
Sue retired from Agway, Inc but is equally remembered as “Sue from the Zoo” for her years at the Burnet Park (Rosamond Gifford) Zoo in Syracuse where she began a successful education program which brought “interesting” animals to area schools. A passionate SU Orange and Yankees fan, she was also active in the Fayetteville United Methodist Church where she facilitated the Grief Support group and volunteered at Francis House and Pompey Historical Society.
Sue was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Peter, sister Jane Schierloh (Jack), parents Carl and Winona McCabe and is survived by son PK (Jennifer), sister in law, Daina Ewton, grandchildren Chloe and Gavin Zarins, nieces Andra and Cinda Ewton, Jackie Schierloh and nephews Jay and Tim Schierloh.
Sue will be remembered for her steadfast friendships and love of family and all animals (especially dogs). She was as fierce as she was compassionate.
A memorial service will be held Friday 5/22/26 at Fayetteville United Methodist Church (NY).
