Temma was born in Auburn-Lewiston, Maine, on June 16th, 1938, the eldest of four daughters to Rabbi Simon and Miriam Robinson Zipper. Her family resided in Auburn-Lewiston during her younger days and moved to Augusta, Georgia when she was in elementary school.
Overachieving, Temma graduated from the Academy of Richmond County High School at the age of 16 with High Honors. She attended Augusta Jr. College for one year, and then went on to the University of Michigan, earning a BA in Education in 1959. After graduation, she returned to Augusta and married her High School Sweetheart, Herbert Berlin Silver.
The Silvers then moved to Los Angeles, where Herbert was attending the University of Southern California Law School, while Temma taught elementary school in Downey. Following Herbert's graduation, they moved to the San Fernando Valley where she continued her teaching career in Simi Valley. They had three children, Martin, Beth and Brett.
Temma was very active in her community. She held several positions at Congregation Beth Kodesh including Sisterhood President and was honored with the Woman of the Year award. She was Vice President of the League of Women of United Synagogue Pacific SW Division and sat on the board of Kadima Hebrew Academy. Temma also launched the Candy Stripers group and was elected their first president at Canoga Park Hospital.
When she wasn’t busy driving carpools to swim meets, gymnastics, horseback riding, Hebrew School etc., she could be found playing tennis at the Calabasas Racquet Club, making hot lunches for students at Kadima Hebrew Academy, lending a hand at the synagogue, or doing the books at Herbert's law office.
In 1987 Temma and her husband returned to their southern roots, moving to Greenville, South Carolina. With all the children out of the house, Temma started a brand-new career working in the restaurant business as a hostess, bookkeeper, and office manager for the next 25 years at Stax’s Restaurants. She was adored by the staff and patrons alike. When Temma became ill, they moved to Charlotte, NC to be near her daughter Beth and her family.
She loved Danielle Steele novels, the television shows NCIS and Dancing with the Stars, and a glass of Cabernet. She also enjoyed going to Rams, Lakers, and Dodgers games - never to actually watch the games, but instead to socialize.
We will miss her love, companionship, sense of humor, and of course her delicious pineapple upside down cake, frozen fudge mousse, and chocolate chip pecan pie. Her cooking expertise was born from her love for desserts, the main course was an afterthought.
Temma is predeceased by her parents and son, Martin. She will be missed by her husband of 63 years, Herbert; her daughters Beth Goldman (Jeff) and Brett Watson (Cory); her daughter-in-law Lisa Silver; her grandchildren Megan and Mia Silver, Emerson and Ellis Goldman, and Ben and Avery Watson; her sisters Honnie Sachs (Ephraim), Ruthie Zipper, and Mashie Zipper; along with her many extended family and friends.
Burial and graveside services will take place on November 4, 2022 at Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta, GA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Temma’s memory be made to the charity of your choice.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.McEwenPinevilleChapel.com for the Silver family.
