

Mr. Thomas Perry Hartis, Jr, 84, died Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at Presbyterian Hospital. A son of the late Thomas Perry Hartis, Sr and Ethel Rhyne Hartis, he was born on July 14, 1926 in Charlotte. He was a retired plumber and took pride in helping his customers. Mr. Hartis was a former member of Belmont Park United Methodist where he served as an usher and later attended University City United Methodist. During Billy Graham’s crusade in Charlotte, Mr. Hartis volunteered as an usher. He served as former president of The Methodist Men’s Club and a counselor for MYF youth group. Mr. Hartis enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, gardening and caring for his animals as well as going to flea markets and estate sales.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00AM, Monday, June 20th at Wilson Funeral Service. Interment with military honors will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife, Jimmie D. Hartis; a son, Tracy Whaley, of Charlotte; four daughters, Kathy Waldrop (Jason), Crystal Simpson, Janice Turner (Rod), Sharon Hartis, all of Charlotte; two sisters, Betty Jean Rimmer (Joe) of Charlotte, Nancy Byers of Gautier, MS; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hartis was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Hartis, a son, Michael Whaley and a brother, Bill Hartis.
