Thomas Wells Turner: “The nicest man in the world – always kind, always loving, and full of fun”, died May 25th, 2012. Born, September 15, 1923 in Wausau, Wisconsin, he was the second child of parents Wells Eugene Turner and Marian Sowerby Turner. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John M. Turner, and Clark H. Turner and his devoted wife of 29 years, Joan Gorton Turner, as well as his stepson, W.T. “Tad” Randol. He is survived by his sister Alene Turner Wall and her husband James, daughters Elizabeth “Beth” Turner Barry and husband John; Mary Turner Christensen and husband John; his loving second wife of 31 years, Nance Randol Turner; and four grandsons, Sean and Michael Christensen, and Zachary and Tyler Randol, who all loved him very much.
The three years he spent in the Army Air Force during WWII were a significant part of his life. As a fighter pilot he flew P-38 Lightnings in the Pacific Combat Zone with the 475th Fighter Group. Following the war he graduated from The University of Wisconsin at Madison, then pursued a successful career as “a packaging machinery sales engineer”.
Retiring in 1984 he and Nance moved from the Cleveland, Ohio area to River Hills, a charming country club community in Lake Wylie, S.C. He loved golf and travel, and happily he managed a lot of both. In 1988 Tom and Nance took another step in retirement and moved to the Cypress Club in Charlotte, which is a lovely independent living facility where he was very happy! Tom Turner will be sorely missed by all who knew him. May God bless him and may he rest in peace and comfort.
A memorial service to celebrate Tom Turner’s life will be held at the clubhouse of the Cypress of Charlotte, 3442 Cypress Club Drive, at 4:00 p.m., Monday, June 4th, 2012. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte, or the charity of your choice.
