Viola Moore, 89, died peacefully on March 2, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 7, 1926 in Matthews, NC, the middle child of Preston and Inez Bass Baucom. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Archie D. Moore, and sister Wilma McCollum. Surviving are her son Gary Moore and wife Debbie of Placida, FL and daughter Janet Slaven and husband Mark of Charlotte. Also surviving are her four grandchildren: Brittany Moore of New Orleans, LA, Tyler Moore and fiancé Erica of Orlando, FL, Josh Slaven of Charlotte, and Trevor Slaven and wife Aubree of NY, NY. Other relatives include her brother Preston Baucom of Monroe, NC and his two daughters. Viola was also blessed with additional “family”, Dr. Hunter and Trisha Dyer, their daughter Kirsten and their son Gaines, and dogs Tessie and Gracie, for 20 years. The love and friendship provided by the Dyer’s enriched her life immeasurably. Viola was very devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren and the Dyer Family.
Viola graduated from Benton Heights High School. She married Arche D. Moore in May, 1946 in Monroe, NC. They moved to Charlotte and she was a stay-at-home Mother to Gary and Janet until they were in college. Archie died in 1973 and Viola took over the family business, then worked for BSA Brokerage, as a substitute teacher and finally as a secretary for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and then part time as a receptionist at Morrison and Company for 22 years. Viola loved the Lord and was a very giving person, always putting others’ wants and needs first. She demonstrated her faith daily and was loved by all who met her. She was a member of Big Springs United Methodist Church, then joined Purcell United Methodist Church in 1964. She was awarded the United Methodist Woman of the Year award and an Honorary Lifetime Pin in 2009. Over the years she taught Sunday School and vacation bible school, was pianist for the adult assembly, participated in the M&M’s, volunteered in the church nursery, and served as circle chairman. She participated in many fund raising events for church and schools. She also volunteered at Mercy Hospital, served as leader for the Brownies, Girl Scouts and Boy scouts. She participated in the PTA and spent many hours volunteering in the classroom. She was very active in the West Mecklenburg Optimist Club for Pop Warner football and cheerleading and for Little League baseball and softball and spent countless hours driving, Gary, Janet and their friends to sporting events and cheering them on.
She cherished time with family and friends, especially time spent eating, boating and floating at the lake house when Archie was living. She loved her time with friends in her exercise classes at The Cornwell Center at Myers Park Baptist Church, and she enjoyed playing cards and games with her friends at the Southminster Retirement Center, where she resided in Assisted Living.
The family sincerely thanks the wonderful staff of Southminster for their loving care, Dr. Michael Friedland (Charlotte Medical Clinic), and the Sanger Heart Failure Clinic for the outstanding care and compassion provided during her lengthy battle with congestive heart failure and the amazing staff at the Levine and Dickson Hospice House for their remarkable care as she began her transition to Heaven.
A celebration of Viola’s life will be held at 11:00 am at the Southminster Retirement Center, 8919 Park Rd, Charlotte on March 8, followed by a reception and visitation. Viola will be laid to rest by her beloved family during a private service at Sharon Memorial Park.
