

Virginia Dare was born in Matthews, N.C. to William Robert Tucker Sr. and Verla (Alexander) Tucker. She was raised on a farm in the Riverbend area of Gaston County. Upon completing high school at Mt. Holly, N.C., she started her career at Southern Bell Telephone, then Union Bus Terminal in Charlotte. She moved to Washington, D.C. and was the Auditor for Trailways Bus Terminal in D.C. In March 1958, Virginia was selected to work for the Department of Defense as a Civil Servant. The highlight of her career was receiving the Civilian Meritorious Medal while working as Travel Branch Chief for the Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon. Virginia and her husband moved to Florida in 1973 and she continued to work for the Federal Government for a total of 30 years government service, retiring from the U.S. Naval Station, Mayport, Florida. Virginia returned from Atlantic Beach, Florida to Pineville, NC to be near her family of origin in 2000.
Virginia was predeceased by her husband of 32 years, Claude Chambers, her parents and her eight siblings, William Robert Jr., Lucille (Tucker) Fisher, Ralph McDonald, Stacy Alexander, Earl Jackson, Tommy Mack, David Franklin, and Charles Leroy Tucker. Until 2022 she thought she would predecease her Aunt Annie Alexander Wilson who passed away in Charlotte at the age of 112.
She is survived by Claude’s children, Claude Stephen (Anna Marie) Chambers of Jacksonville, Florida, Phyllis Cooper of Morristown, Tennessee and Norma Faye VanCak of Sorrento, Florida and Claude’s many grandchildren, including John & Joey, and great grandchildren. She is also survived by several cousins on the Alexander side and numerous nieces and nephews on the Chambers and Tucker side. Many of her family, extended family, and friends knew and loved the constancy of her kindness and caring through their lifetime. Mrs. Chambers was a member of Pineville United Methodist Church. She was a Life Member of NARFE, Charlotte Chapter 1671.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Pineville United Methodist Church on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026 at 1:00 PM with a reception to follow.
