Ginny was born in Charlotte on October 15, 1936, to the late Walter S. and Clara M. Dunn. She was a lifelong member of Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she received the Honorary Life Membership award given by the Presbyterian Women of the Church in 2017, for “her lifetime in devoted service to her church and community and for her impact on the lives of many with her love, generosity, and actions.”
Ginny personified devotion - to family, faith, and community. This included singing in the church choir for more than 60 years, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, participating in Women’s Circle and other Women of the Church activities, serving as a church Deacon, volunteering for numerous fundraising events, and participating in many outreach activities, including accompanying the minister to serve Communion to homebound church members for many years.
Ginny was highly regarded in her community as a deeply caring person who loved her family dearly and who was genuinely interested in their lives, along with those of her friends, neighbors, and fellow church members. She found great joy in helping others, offering rides to church services and doctor appointments and running errands for those who couldn’t drive themselves. She also volunteered at Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center for six years.
Over the years, Ginny could be found cheering on her nieces and nephews at sporting events, attending school performances, and showing up in support of her many loved ones for all kinds of occasions.
A 1955 graduate of West Mecklenburg High School, Ginny was employed by the City of Charlotte for several years. She retired from Crane Supply Co. in 2000 after 40 years of service.
In addition to her parents, Ginny was preceded in death by two brothers, R. Carlton Dunn and W. Donald Dunn, both of Charlotte.
Survivors include her beloved sister and best friend, Sara D. Yarbrough of Charlotte; three nieces, Christie Y. Bumgardner (Mark) of Concord, Carla D. Cook (Scott) of Huntersville, and Connie Y. Stroup (Scott) of Charlotte; two nephews, Michael R. Yarbrough of Durham, and Stephan W. Dunn (Kathryn) of Iron Station; sister-in-law Glenda L. Dunn of Huntersville; and countless great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends who loved “Aunt Ginny.”
Ginny’s family would like to thank members of her church, her friends, and her extended family for their many acts of kindness and support.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 20 at 10:30 a.m., at Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church, 3413 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road, Charlotte, NC 28216. A graveside service and interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will host a brief visitation in the church Fellowship Hall immediately following the graveside service.
