

Charlotte – W. Paul Monroe passed away Wednesday, November 16, 2016. He was born in Kinston, NC on October 27th, 1934 to John T. Monroe and Annie H Monroe. He was married for 58 years to his wife, Jane Sox Monroe, who preceded him in death April 13th. His three sons, Will and wife Pam of Sherrills Ford, Charles and wife Angela of Charlotte, and Thad and wife Amy of Hickory survive Paul. Jane and Paul have six grandchildren, Anne of Asheville, Rachel and husband Morgan of Newton, Caroline of Charlotte, John, Clegg, and Mollie Sox of Hickory, and two great-granddaughters, Riley of Charlotte and Madden of Newton. His brother, Thad and Thad’s wife Coolie also survive Paul.
Upon graduating from Fayetteville Senior High, Paul attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he met the love of his life, Jane. While at UNC he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. After earning a degree in Business Administration, Paul served in the United States Army with the 18th Airborne Corp.
Subsequent to his military service Paul and Jane moved to Hickory and he began working for Southern Desk, a division of Drexel Heritage Furnishings, Inc. Paul was employed by Drexel Heritage for the entirety of his 31-year career. He held a number of positions including Vice President – Finance, Senior Vice President – Director of Operations, Board of Directors, and President of the company. Upon retiring, he served on a number of boards, including the Board of Visitors of UNC-CH.
The family would like to thank Dr. Chris Teigland, Dr. Earle Burgess, Pam Tiseo, RN, the staffs of Levine Cancer Institute, Carolinas Healthcare, and the Cypress of Charlotte for all of their loving care and compassion over the past eight years. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Jane Sox Monroe Endowed Scholarship at UNC-CH School of Nursing, the Jane Sox Monroe Endowed Professorship in Nursing at UNC-CH, or a charity of your choice.
A celebration of Paul’s life will be held Monday, November 21st at First Presbyterian Church in Hickory, NC at 11 am. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
