He was born the 4th of June, 1933 in Burke County, North Carolina, son of the late Woodfin Vernon Ray and Bessie Leona Carpenter Ray. Walter was a 1953 graduate of North Mecklenburg High School.
Walter had a long career with the City of Charlotte working in the Department of Transportation frim 1960 – 1992. He was a member of Holly Hunter Baptist Church.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Ranson Ridge Assisted Living Center in Huntersville, N.C. on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. Walter’s family wishes to thank the staff of Ranson Ridge and Via Health Partners for the dedication and care they gave to our father.
He is survived by his two daughters: Sonya Ray Norris and her husband, Jay and Tammy Ray Creech and her husband, Joseph; granddaughter, Emily Creech Pomenich and husband, Marc and a sister, Dorothy Ray Hagler and multiple nieces and nephews; his girlfriend, Joan Malizia He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ila Wellmon Ray of 55 years.
