

Born August 18, 1933 in Johnston County, NC, he was the son of late W.C. Braswell and Virginia Dare Braswell. Paul graduated with a degree in architecture from the School of Design at North Carolina State University. He then went on to get his master’s degree in architecture at Harvard University’s School of Design. In 1956, Paul was an instructor at the Boston Architecture Center. He returned to N.C. in 1958 and worked for A.G. Odell. In 1959, he opened his own firm, Paul Braswell Architects PA. In 2000, he began teaching in the Architectural Technology Department at Central Piedmont Community College, where he worked until retirement in 2017.
His firm received in 1972 two Award of Merits from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (NC AIA); one for the St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, Albemarle, NC and one for the Outdoor Learning Center at Myers Park Baptist Church. In 1981, he received an Honor Award from the NC AIA for the Duke Mansion White Oaks Condominiums.
Paul was very active in the community. He served as Vice President and President of the Harvard Club of Charlotte from 1973 to 1978. Also, he was a member of the Charlotte Civitan Club playing a key role in the leadership during his tenure. He was a director/advisor to Nevins Center, Inc. 1972-90. Paul has been an active member of Myers Park Baptist Church since 1971. In addition to his civic duties he served in the U.S. Army Reserves retiring as a Colonel.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Braswell; and two daughters, Hope Braswell and Lisa Braswell.
A service to celebrate Paul’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2017 at Myers Park Baptist Church. The family will receive friends in the Great Hall vestibule following the service.
