Nécrologie de Alan Gault Dillard Jr.
Alan Gault Dillard, Jr., 80, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2019 with family by his side in Charlottesville, Virginia. Alan is survived by his wife Daphne “Penny” Dillard, children Sharon Mast and husband Rick, Sandy van der Vaart and husband Don and Alan Gault Dillard III (Trey) and wife Angela, brother Mitch, as well as eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Alan is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alan Gault Dillard, and daughter Sue Beckner. Alan was born on March 29,1939 in Richmond, Virginia to Mr. and Mrs. Alan Gault Dillard. He attended Fluvanna High School and then enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for seven years as an aircraft mechanic. He married his high school sweetheart Penny and moved to San Antonio, Texas. The couple welcomed daughters Sharon, Sandy and Sue into their family and then returned to Virginia in 1964 where Alan worked as a Charlottesville City police officer. In 1970, Alan and Penny welcomed son Trey into their family. While working as a police officer, Alan developed a business paving driveways which eventually led to the founding of A.G. Dillard, Jr. Paving, Inc. in 1966. Over the next two decades, the business grew under Alan’s leadership to include grading, utilities and concrete services and ultimately led to him changing the company’s name to A.G. Dillard Inc. to better reflect its expansion. The reputation that he built for quality, timely completion and value are the foundations that the success and continued growth of A.G. Dillard Inc. were built on. Along with his career and work ethic, he had a passion for auto racing that started all the way back in Texas. He built and raced his own cars with much success in Texas and continued upon his return to Virginia. He gave up driving in the mid-1970s and took a break from motorsports before returning in the mid-1980s as a NASCAR team owner. He enjoyed success at the highest levels of stock car racing before retiring fully from the sport in the mid-1990s. He also enjoyed boating, working around his farm and watching University of Virginia sports. The family will receive visitors at Covenant Church 1025 Rio Road E. on Wednesday May 15 at 6-8pm. A funeral is scheduled for Thursday, May 16 at Covenant Church at 1pm, with a graveside service to follow at Monticello Memory Garden. Pete Hartwig will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Alan's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of the Piedmont 675 Peter Jefferson Pkwy. Suite 300 Charlottesville, VA 22911 or City Church 1010 Rio Road E. Charlottesville , VA 22901. The family would like to thank Melanie Jones and Thelma Wingfield for their care and dedication.
