
Albert was born on August 9th, 1942 to Albert F. and Jeanette Shank in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the oldest of 3 children, with a brother Tom and sister Janet.
Albert had a long and decorated career in the US Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1997, and retiring in 2002 as a Master Sargent E8. He also worked in the Virginia prison system as a jail warden, and a postal employee for the USPS until he retired. He has a BA from the University of Iowa and a degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Nebraska Omaha.
He met his wife Alba V. Shank when he was stationed in Eritrea and was married in July 1967. He had 6 children, 2 of whom died in infancy and one who succumbed to brain cancer at age 6. His daughter Alba Maria Shank and her husband Curtis Hince reside in Ruckersville VA, and his oldest son Albert F Shank, III and his wife Tracy live in Phoenix, AZ. His youngest son Paul lives in Michigan. Albert has 6 grandchildren – Andrew and Makenzey Shank, Lucia, Frank, and Fiona Hince, and Aliya Shank.
Albert was known extensively around Charlottesville, VA where he and his family lived in the same house on Kenwood Lane from July 1976 until the death of his wife and declining health resulted in a move to The Blake of Charlottesville where he lived out his last year of life. He loved politics, writing, reading, singing, military history, photography, music, travel, and cruising around Charlottesville in his convertible Mustang. His Letters to the Editor were regularly published in the Daily Progress newspaper. He was known for being extremely well organized and thorough in his filing systems and paperwork. He was also known as a sharp dresser and his wife teasingly compared him to Imelda Marcos because of his shoe collection. He and his wife took special pride in the extensive landscaping of his yard, where every season found an abundance of blooming flowers of all kinds.
Albert was predeceased by his mother, father, brother, wife, sons Andrew and Maximilien, and daughter Ursula. He is survived by his sister, 2 sons, 1 daughter, and 6 grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Thursday April 30th from 6-9pm at Teague Funeral Home. A service will be conducted the next day May 1st at 1pm at Teague Funeral Home with burial at Monticello Memory Gardens to follow immediately afterwards.
