Angela Beatrice DeMaio, 95, of Charlottesville, VA, formerly of Wheaton, MD, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, November 5, 2016. Angie was born August 11, 1921 in Newark, New Jersey to Sicilian immigrants, Maria and Gaetano Bunetta. She attended Central High School in Newark and then secretarial school. She met the bright and humorous Albert DeMaio in 1941 who would become her husband of 60 years until his death in August, 2002. A war bride, she traveled by train across the country to join Al when he served in the US Army, living in Washington and Arkansas until the war ended. They re-settled in Newark and Angie raised three children. She took an active interest in her children’s education serving as President of the elementary school PTA. Al’s career with the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs then took them to Washington, DC and Angie became a devoted homemaker. She became very involved in community and civic activities planning neighborhood parades, block parties, and community picnics. She held several secretarial positions over the years for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Rockville, MD. Angie loved spending time with her family and friends and considers raising her children as the most important thing she has ever done. She enjoyed dancing, movies, reading, bingo and other board games, and travel. A highlight of Angie’s life was a two-week trip she took to Rome, Florence, Venice, and Sicily in Italy with her family. Most memorable was discovering and reconnecting with long lost cousins in Angie’s mother’s hometown of Butera, Sicily. That day, fifteen members of the family left work early at noon to meet and visit with Angie’s family and serve a traditional Italian feast accompanied by their best wines. Angie is preceded in death by her husband, Albert; her parents, Gaetano and Maria; and her sisters Tina and Mildred. Angie is survived by her sons Dorian (Christine) DeMaio and Thomas DeMaio (Janet Heinzmann); her daughter Lisa Sheridan (Ross); three grandchildren, Lauren DeMaio, Cayla Ferari (John Breznicky) and Ryan DeMaio; niece and nephew and special cousins. Angie’s family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the entire staff at the Colonnades Senior Living Community in Charlottesville, VA who made the last six years of Angie’s life a complete joy with all their planned activities, delicious meals, and friendly spirit. Private burial services will be held at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD on Saturday, November 12, 2016. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Angela’s name to the charity of your choice or to the Colonnades Staff Holiday Fund, 2600 Barracks Rd., Charlottesville, VA 22901.
