

A. Grant Holt was born in Evanston, IL on October 26, 1925 to Arthur Grant Holt, Sr. and Alice Brenne Holt and died March 9, 2015 in Charlottesville, VA. After graduating from college Grant Holt joined the State Department first stationed in Washington DC then working out of Miami, FL covering South America and finally out of Paris traveling back and forth to Moscow, RU and Berlin, DE. He met his first wife Reid Needham Holt in Berlin and were married in Stockholm in 1948. He was a graduate of Amherst College and along with his college roommate, Robert Howard and his brother, John Howard founded Holt-Howard Associates, of Stamford, CT a company that designed housewares that established markets and brand awareness in the 1950’s thru the 1970’s. H-H purchased Colonial Candies of Cape Cod, and John E. Buck & Company of Colechester, UK, and had offices in NYC, San Rafael, CA ,Toronto, CA and Colechester. They revolutionized how coffee was consumed taking it from cups and saucers to The Coffee Mug. Their products were manufactured first in Stockholm, SE and then Worcester, MA . With the rise in costs in the US they found factories abroad and developed relationships with manufactures that made products to their specifications in Japan, Hong Kong, Portugal, Germany, Italy, France and India. Grant Holt is survived by his second wife, Carter Greene Houck whom he enjoyed 32 years of marriage with. He is survived by his son Craig Grant Holt and wife Karen of Newburyport, MA, daughter Lezley Holt Lagerstedt and her husband Rich of Northfield, VT, nieces Martha Shiflett and her husband Jimmy of Oviedo, FL and Linda Reddoch, of Pensacola, FL. He is also survived by his step-daughter Linda Houck-Mahoney and husband Omar of Oklahoma City, OK. Additionally, he is survived by granddaughters Erika, Brook and Amanda and grandsons Scot and Shawn who affectionately referred to him as Grand Daddy UG. A Celebration of Life will be conducted 11:00am Friday, March 20, 2015 at St. Paul Memorial Church in Charlottesville. Inurnment will be private at Doub’s Chapel, Pfafftown, NC at a later date.
